Volunteering Abroad: from Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica to a Wildlife Reserve in Africa!

Volunteer in Costa Rica – Sea turtle Conservation

Various locations, Costa Rica

GoEco in Costa RicaMy name is Bailey and I am the winner of the 2012 New Years Resolution Grant! I first volunteered with GoEco in the summer of 2011 when I took my first trip abroad alone to Costa Rica.

It was absolutely terrifying at first and I called my mom crying the first night because I was so homesick! But the moment I got to the sea turtle conservation project I knew that this would be a place I’d never want to leave. Within the first day I had become close with a few girls from the UK and we very quickly became inseparable.

Boogie boarding with friends!

Our mornings were spent clearing the beach of drift wood to make the turtles’ journey on to the beach to lay eggs easier and our nights were spent wandering the beach in search of turtles and/or egg poachers. Costa Rican afternoons are much too hot for physical labour, so this allowed for relaxation and travel. Overall, it was an absolutely crazy and unforgettable experience!

Tropical paradise!

After returning from Costa Rica, I went back to Thompson Rivers University in BC,Canada to do my second year of studies. I’m currently studying animal biology in order to obtain my Bachelor of Science and then I’m going on to vet school.

Bonding with other volunteers

My life goal is to open my own animal sanctuary and my experiences with GoEco will help me to gain the knowledge I need to realize my dream. That’s why this coming summer I’m going to use my grant to help me spend a month at an animal sanctuary in Africa or Bolivia. I’m super excited for this amazing opportunity with GoEco!
