Field Report From the Tiger and Lion Park in South Africa

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

I arrived at the Tiger and Lion Park in Port Elizabeth two weeks ago, and still have one more week to go… though I am trying not to think about it!

When I first arrived, I was dazzled by all the new kinds of (wild!) animals I got to see here, the amazing ocean view and all the interesting people I met from all over the world. I got to stroke a full grown lion and Or, a big female Bengal tiger, jumped on my back and hugged me (no claws or teeth!)

I met the caracals and leopards, the Black Panther and the meerkats – Ice and Igor. The White lion cub and White Bengal tiger cub are also very cute, and I got to introduce them to visitors from overseas when they came to the park.

One time I went for a run and met a giraffe on my way. I stopped while she just hovered over me, staring, until she turned and walked away.

The park also organizes day trips to nearby activities, such as the Bbloukrans Bridge Bungy jump (216m!!!), Addo Elephant Park, horseback riding trips, and a lot more. We even visited a school for Township kids, which gave us the opportunity to get to know the culture here in South Africa.

The park staffs are friendly, and the “kitchen and cleaning ladies” are really good cooks and keep your cabins and laundry clean! In the evenings you get a free cooking hand with your colleagues, and it’s always fun.

Once a week we go out to a restaurant, and to the store. I made friends for life out here, and I don’t only mean the animals!

I am really enjoying my time here and wish I could stay longer… but I can always come back!
