The most exciting part about my journey was learning about the different cultures and religions. You can read about such things or watch them on TV but it is nothing like experiencing them first hand. I think it’s very important to learn that there are people in this world who were raised differently from you, have different religions, eat different kinds of food but yet you can still relate to them in so many ways.
I had no idea what to expect when I arrived in Israel for the Multicultural Eco Summer Camp, because I’ve never traveled outside of the U.S. before. I knew that it would be a great once in a lifetime experience for me.
My experience working with the GoEco Multicultural Summer Camp Program, was more than anything I could have imagined or prayed for. I worked at a local community center teaching children, from the ages of 3 to 6 yrs, English as well as everyday fun learning activities.
During my stay I stayed with a host family for two weeks who treated me as if they had known me for years. They welcomed me into their home and called me their “U.S. daughter”. They would take me to meet almost every member of the family who lived in the local village, all just as warm and welcoming.
The most rewarding thing, was knowing that by the time I left the community center, the children I worked with had enjoyed the 2 weeks we had worked and laughed together. Most importantly, they had not just learnt English, but also a little bit about my culture as well.
My personal goals that I accomplished were traveling outside of my country for the first time, not only for my own personal experience but to give my time in helping others, making new friends from all over the world and most importantly discovering and developing myself as a person, both spiritually and emotionally.
I grew to love and admire the children who I worked with at the community center, as well as my host family. The field trips we went to with the community center and the children, the beautiful wedding I was invited to by my host family, the bond I made with the other GoEco volunteers, are memories I will forever cherish and be able to tell my children and grandchildren.
Thank you for giving people like me the chance for a once in a lifetime experience that doesn’t just benefit themselves but also others.
