Volunteering in South Africa – An Absolute Blast

Volunteer in South Africa – Teach Children and Surf in Cape Town
Cape Town, South Africa

I spent two weeks at the Teach Children and Surf in Cape Town project. I wasn’t aware until after I had booked that the time that I was going was the exact same two weeks that the schools take holidays.

I really wasn’t sure what the program was going to be like, but I’m very glad that they do their “holiday club” for the kids during the holidays. Basically what we did as volunteers half of the time was go to one of the very impoverished schools and plan a bunch of games to play with the kids for 5 hours or so.

One of the schools! I really didn’t take pics on project, but I took this one while the kids were napping.

Let me tell you, it takes a lot out of you! These kids have been brought up in some really harsh conditions and they don’t have the same attention span or behaviors as kids from home. But it was so very rewarding for those same reasons. The other half of the days we spent doing special activities, like climbing Lion’s Head Mountain or doing a fun day at the beach.

The hike up Lions Head. My child ran ahead to the top of the mountain long before I could make it up, but luckily there’s only one way down!

I was in the water for beach day and some kids lied about being able to swim, so when there’s waves and current and you’re in charge of 5 kids who suddenly can’t swim it can be a challenge to keep everyone safe! But at the end of the day I think we all had a blast.

If it wasn’t for the holiday club program that save ran during this two week break, who knows what kind of awful things the kids could have been exposed to. Just come to the neighborhoods yourself and you’ll see what I mean. Teach Children and Surf in Cape Town is so valuable and I’m so happy that I got to be a part of it. The kids give huge hugs and big smiles, so you know they’ve had a blast.
